what's opc?

What is it?

I didn't know until I had the training. If you're into process control and automation, you'd definitely learn a lot on DCOM and comms in process control. Check this site. If not, don't bother unless you plan to automate the lighting around your house or teach your garage door to auto-detect you everytime you get in the driveway...

We had this whole week of training with Randy Kondor from the OPC training institute. OPC is a good topic for conversation (and so was Canada... where Randy came from... and I specifically remember his discussion on pine beetles which bury in pine trees and their environmental effect caused by the temperature no longer reaching -40 degrees. Yes, even global warming has an effect in Canada!).

It's amazing how I got to write this far without even giving you an answer. What then is OPC? Open Process Connectivity, OLE for Process Control, or simply OPC...

If it's hard to explain to m...

Manghimayong pag-abot sa Cebu

Cebu during the rainy days is not bad at all. It will easily complement one's "emo" perspective.

The dining experience:
- Best cheescake found at Madeleine, Waterfront. Order it at the lobby because it's cheaper than if you order it from the restaurant.
- A lot of houses have been converted to cozy restaurants. Most notable are Casa Verde and Moon Cafe. Try the baby back ribs at Case Verde - P148. Sulit!
- Inato is the Cebuano's version of Bacolod's inasal. Best place to get it is Jo's chicken inato.
- A full plate of baked oysters topped with garlic, cheese and butter costs only P80 at AA's. Also try the spicy fried squid. Lami na barato pa!
- Bigby's has the most artsy places and a varied collection of classy dishes to match. We tried the Japanese Zen salad and baby back ribs. Perting lami-a. Tinuod! They have branches at Gaisano and Ayala Mall. Their first branch in Manila is coming soon at Mall of Asia.

Places to visit:
Tops - actually named Top on their billboard, over...

Cathy, the cleavage, and smeared mascara

Cathy was my playmate and our neighbor back in my elementary days. She had gone through a mitral valve problem last December and she needs heart surgery to get her heart back in shape. I guess all the minuses and pluses in life finally do add up and here we were on such a happy and lovely day, her wedding.

I looked around. The best man was crying and so was the maid of honor. The tears of joy were contagious. And for that very reason, I had refused to cry. Baka mahawa sa pag-iyak. True enough, as Cathy walked down the aisle and looked at me, I held my smile in place and gave her the signal to smile herself. I will never know the exact feeling she had at that very moment but she looked like she was in a trance - ...

Our cartero named Boyet

Our cartero is named Boyet. Only a few people probably know their cartero nowadays In fact, only a few have the reason to do so.

I was waiting for a registered mail from the SSS. A registered mail from SSS would mean that the mailman could not just so easily leave your letter in your drop box. Somebody had to be at your house to receive it and a signature was needed for formality.T he mailman was not someone who should so easily give up and was required to come back for at least three tries.

During the first try, our mailman was able to arrive at our house and thank God my housemate was there. But then, the presence of a receiver and the signature was unfortunately not enough. At least my SSS ID or a authorization letter was needed as the final hurdle to completing the task. So I didn't get my letter. And so I wrote the authorization letter and handed it over to Phoebe, my housemate.

On the mailman's second try, Phoebe was not around and instead, Oy2, another housemate was there. ...

Puerto Princesa Frontier

Trivia in a Blink:

>Honda Bay takes it's name from the Kuyunin (Palawan tribal group) term "Hunda". Most visited islands are Starfish, Pandan and Snake Island. Snorkel and see a school of talakitok.
>Underneath St Paul Mountain runs the well-reknowned Underground River. best time to go here would be Jan to March when the poo-poo of the bats doesn't stink.
>Sabang is where the banka going to the Underground River comes from. Have lunch at Rosario's facing the open beach. Try binakol soup with buko strips.
>Best coffee in Puerto Princesa is served in Itoy's. This is owned by the current vice-mayor. Try their Kape ni Itoy (Cafe Latte).
>Best restaurant to try is Ka Lui's. Special - Cuttlefish Sisig.
>Dining extravaganza: Kinabuch's, Balinsasayaw, Bilao't Palayok (best mango shake!)
>Mangoes are not allowed to be brought out of Palawan. There are insects which burrow in the seed. They are trying to contain this problem.

The Backyard Experiments

One lazy summer afternoon, Emmy had nothing much else to do. As she sorted through her things, her eyes finally settled on a piece of metal barely noticeable beneath a small heap of clips and clothes. "Hey, my camera!" she said and she set off to wander in and around the house. The vivid colors splashed across their backyard beckoned, the pull betwwen lens and subject growing stronger...

Ok, enough of the storyline and back to reality. Never would I have thought that the perfect subjects were just right under my nose in our backyard. There is one blurred picture here though - the caterpillar. It was such a chubby little thing but the light just wouldn't let me capture it sitting snugly against the dwarf calachuchi (with pink flowers) shrub and eating its heart out. :)

a summer odyssey

i lost my goggles in clearwater, pampanga. but the P700 worth was nothing compared to the experience i had as the socials commiitte raked through north and south of metro manila just to find the perfect spot for the company summer outing. we ended up choosing clearwater because of the gazillion things one could do there - kayak, boating, fishing, swimming, bicycling, mini-golf and our favorites - to relax, sleep and EAT.

But if we were given the freedom to choose, Playa in Calatagan would be paradise! Laid back jazz-reggae music, glaring white sand which makes you squint and eventually doze off, gourmet food served underneath the serenity of a shaded hut plus a sassy atmosphere... However, one would need membership and that would cost not lower than a million pesos.

Here are a few trivia:
- several TV shows have made their set at Clearwater pretending it's a place somewhere in the US (must be the lake-and-dock effect just like in Dawson's creek)
- the coconut tree in Munting Bu...

tales from puerto galera

a year ago, i had an unusual trip to the famed island. tired of the usual white beach tirade of gimiks, my officemates and I tried a different destination - this time La Laguna. we touched shore at sabang, finally believed that it was hard core red light district and started the 15min walk (well it would take longer if you came with a photo-hungry group) to La Laguna. The tree-lined shot was taken in one of the narrow footpaths we trekked along.

Upon arriving at La Laguna, it was definitely peaceful. the rush of wind blowing through your hair and streaks of sunlight peeping through as you look up the coconut trees. But it was too quiet and it did not exactly match our mood for excitement and new thrills. So there we ended up hiring a banka going to white beach (again!) at P600... which is almost as expensive as the trip from batangas pier.

Back at white beach, there was a mixture of familiarity, tranquility and excitement... all to our group's taste. The mamang taho shot was take...
